2001 2.4L Magentis Wrong fluid in transmission

Asked by Assweasel Mar 03, 2017 at 01:46 PM about the 2001 Kia Magentis LX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My daughter  bought this car for pretty cheap and found the transmission doing something really weird. So I of course checked the transmission fluid. And was surprised to find a clear  oil in there. More Like steering fluid or Hydraulic Oil. Was surprised because I know at times engine oils are in some transmissions. So get online and check and the Vehicle is supposed to have ATF in it.

Is this correct or am I missing something here.
The vehicle runs  but transmission slips and then hard engages. Is this just some stupid thing someone did? The car has no leaks so.....??
Or was this a backyard Mechanics trick to get a few more miles out of a dead transmission?

don't drive it till the fluid is replaced , they make it pink for a reason , a curb service tranny flush will never get it all and I've heard that the pro. flushing doesn't either , not sure . But don't drive it till you take care of that .

Take it to a transmission shop, show them whats going on, they will know what to do with it.
