Bad gas mileage and gas smell from left rear wheel?

So I've got a new 2016 Hyundai Elantra 1.6cc
engine with almost 6000km on it. And I'm getting a
very bad gas mileage. Every now and then or
maybe all the time. When I park the car after
driving I get a strong gas smell from the left rear
driver's side wheel area and from the gas cap and
there's no check engine light so I'm thinking it's a
leak involving the gas tank and the smell is
completely unburnt fuel. Do you think that's why
I'm getting a bad gas mileage?  And this only
happens after driving and parking the car so what
could be the problem? Any ideas?
