Crud In Bell Housing

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Recently pulled the engine out of my 08 Impreza 2.5i manual. Ant the entire
interior of the bell housing is black with oil and dirt, a lot of it. I'm going to
clean it and remove the flywheel and clutch and clean everything with break
cleaner. I've already bought a new rear main seal (crank seal) and replace that
with the hopes of fixing any leaks. Should I be worried all of this is coming
from the transmission - how can one tell if it's coming from the transmission?

Thanks

Black crud could be normal build up from clutch material depositing on the bell housing. Make sure the rear main seal and the front seal on the transmission don't need replacing. Now is the time to do it if it is needed!

I cleaned it out well and replaced the rear main seal on the engine. I would have to pull and split the transmission in half in order to replace that transmission seal on the Subaru. Poor design on their part. I will do a transmission rebuild or swap at another date.
