Traction in winter driving

Asked by Cory Dec 23, 2020 at 04:06 PM about the 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan Crew Plus FWD

Question type: General

We have a 2013 dodge caravan and I was wanting to ask if we put the
transmission in a lower gear will that help for snow/icey covered hilly roads for
traction so the front tires will not lose grip and start spinning out of control.
Last time it snowed I went on small hill snow road and front tires starting
spinning and this is concerning , by the way the front tires were bad but not bald
and there is new tires on it now. Thanks

With new tires, you should be good then. If you don't want to spin while pulling out, if you can, you want to put the transmission in second gear starting out, not first gear to help with traction pulling away from a stop sign.

Lower gears have no traction benefit at all. Buy snow tires or get an AWD car.
