Having to down shift to gain power AND smelling gasoline makes me think it's a fuel related problem. It's old enough to have rusted fuel lines to the engine and you might be leaking gasoline while motor is running. Take a look underneath. If you see any drips of gas while parked and idling on pavement, take it in for repair.
