gear indicator stays on P

Asked by Carhauler50 Apr 15, 2017 at 02:38 AM about the 2009 Chevrolet Uplander LS FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I move shifter to reverse or any other gear and the indicator on the dash still
says P. I can put it in reverse and it backs up fine. when I put it in drive the van
will not start off in first and upshift. it starts off in drive and takes off very
slowly. the only way to take off is to. manually shift gears. Any ideas?

I disconnected the battery for 20 minutes and reconnected. The engine light is now out but the transmission indicator light still stays in the P position. Also upon test drive it will not shift. I put it in D and when I go to take off it starts in 3rd gear and does not automatically shift. I get all gears on if I shift manually.
