What possible causes my 2001 Honda Civic to slow down when driving, whine, eventually stop but still run?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Was driving fine, suddenly slowed, made a whining noise, came to a stop but
still engine running. Will run for about 1/4 mile when restarted, but happens
again.

Transmission is shot.Will need rebuilt.A major issue for 2001-2002 automatic civics.
