Locked keys in trunk

Asked by Jpdraughter Jan 05, 2019 at 07:14 PM about the 2016 Hyundai Sonata Eco FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I locked my keys in the trunk and i got a locksmith to come open the doors,
which tripped the alarm and made the truck inaccessible. I cant lower the back
seats because the release levers are in the trunk. Has anyone figured out how
to get into the trunk from the inside of the car?

There is a small round rubber grommet in the driver’s side at the same level of the door lock on the edge of the door. Remove the grommet and locate the bolt that holds the door lock in place and remove it. Pet the door lock from the door and remove it exposing a slot into which you will insert a screwdriver and turn it to unlock all doors and now your trunk button will work. The car battery must be connected during this procedure in order for it to work.

GURUH9RQK: You have to pet It so that it will like you and come if easily. Actually I must have been tired when I wrote that...apologies. Just remove the door lock and stick a screwdriver in there and turn it to activate the door unlock mechanism.

There is a little rubber thing on the drivers side door(if you get it open) remove it and stick a very small screw driver in it. While someone is doing that have another person go around to the trunk and there is a secret button on the Hyundai symbol.

If you still have access to inside of the vehicle, open the fuse box under the dash pull the door lock fuse, make sure someone is standing at the trunk to release the trunk. Once the fuse is pulled all doors will unlock.

My sister locker her keys in the trunk of her Elantra. Called AAA and they were able to unlock doors (alarm did go off) but they were not able to open the trunk; no access from back seat nor did the trunk release button located on the inside driver door work. Removing the door fuse didn't work nor was there any trunk cable access like in the Sonata. I followed Stefano's procedures and was able to unlock the trunk. Note; I had to use a nut driver (a screwdriver that works on bolts) to unscrew the black bolt securing the door handle/lock to the door. Be careful not to lose the bolt as you remove it. I loosened the door handle and the lock mechanism pulled right out. This lock mechanism has a long screwdriver looking part to it that fits into the door hole. If you look into the hole you can see the slot where this screwdriver looking part fits to. It is here that you use a standard screwdriver to fit in the slot. Turn the screwdriver and this will unlock all the doors and reset the trunk release button. Press the trunk release button and the truck will open. Place the door lock/handle back to the door and reattach with the bolt. Reattach the rubber grommet.

I’ve locked my keys in the trunk several times with doors locked before. I’ve always been able to unlock the trunk by pressing the trunk release button on the outside. Trunk pops open. I guess this works because the key is “close” to the car.
