2016 Nissan versa ac clutch

I tried replacing my ac clutch on my versa. I followed it step by step. when I
turn the ac on it grinds then starts smoking. I bought a brand new clutch, I am
not sure what I'm doing wrong?

Locked up AC compressor.

Replace the compressor and clutch as one unit. I agree with Gene, sounds like the compressor is worn out! Jim
