Cylinder Wall Crack Cylinder 2

Asked by Brian Feb 17, 2021 at 06:24 AM about the 2016 Ford Edge SEL AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2016 Ford Edge SEL with a 2.0l ecoboost
engine. I took my car to my shop I always use
yesterday because of a check engine light. I was
told the code was for a cylinder 2 misfire (P0302),
being caused by a crack in the wall of cylinder 2.
This shop replaced a spark plug for this cylinder
about 5 months ago because I was getting the
same code for this cylinder then. It worked for
awhile but then the light came back on. So I was
told yesterday that the remedy to this problem
would be an engine rebuild or replacement. I have
to take my car into ford dealership in a few days
for the day while they run stress tests & verify
everything before authorizing a
replacement/rebuild. Is there any reason based off
what I wrote that they could try to void the power
train warranty (I am still in warranty regarding
years & miles. Car has 48,841)? Also, any input as
to what causes this type of issue?

I have no idea of what Ford will do. What type of gas do you use?

It doesn't have a crack in the cylinder, the head gasket is bad. It will be a replacement and NOT a rebuild. It should be still under powertrain warranty. 60 months or 60,000 miles.

I use regular gas. And I was shown a picture of the crack. A scope with a camera was sent down the cylinder to look

You can't rebuild a cracked block. Next time use premium regardless of what Ford says.

If the cylinder is cracked, that is not common. The 2.0 has been pretty good, but has had a few head gasket issues.

Are you sure coolant was not leaking into the cylinders? This is becoming a more common issues with the 2.0L ecoboost engines and there is a class action lawsuit.
