Burning oil

Asked by Aug 25, 2018 at 05:06 PM about the 2016 Kia Sorento SX V6 AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We have a 2016 Kia Sorento on three different occasions
the Kia has burned all of oil between oil changes once
around 30,000 changes the oil went back after driving
1000 it was fine at the next oil change it was still fine. At
our last oil change at 69,000 it was low again changed it
went back to recheck and it was two quart low. The cat
also shut off at the red light but started back up with no
problem. No warning lights have ever came on. Called Kia
they are going to change the oil again and have us drive it
1000 miles and recheck if low again they will send info to
extended warranty department to see if they will pay for
the repairs. See if they will pay. Why have the warranty if
they don’t cover the cost. We had an small issue after out
of manufacture warranty and I was told I didn’t have the
extended warranty. After that I showed them my paper
were I had it so to me it sounds like I am about to get the
run around on fixing my vechile. Has anyone else had the
burning oil issue?

Same problem with 2016 Kia Optima... I smell a rat... Kia has had major recalls in the past for high oil consumption!

I am dealing with having to take the Kia back to the dealership every 500 Miles to have them check it for about 4-6 times and then they will see what they can do. This is so crazy.

I'm having the same problem but mine is burning a lot. I add at least 3 quarts between oil changes. Kia did an oil consumption test and less than 1,000 the oil fell under the low line on the dipstick. They took it out of service and are looking into a new engine but something tells me they'll dip everything possible to get out of it.

We are having the same issue. We were 1.5 quarts low after 1500 miles. Would you like to contact each other and see if we are going through the same steps or processes. We can share info. This is crap.

I agree there is too many people having the exact same problem. There has to be something wrong with so many of us having the same issue. As I am typing this I am sitting at the Kia dealership having the oil check again. They keep telling me it has to be 4-6 visits then they will check with the extended warranty to see what they think. I know what the answer will be sorry nothing we can do.

I have a 2012 but am experiencing the same problem. There is no leak yet the oil seems to just vanish. How is this possible?

I have a 2016 Kia Sorento that is losing oil too. Just went through the Kia oil consumption test with my dealership which consisted of two 500 mile tests and one 1,000 mile test. The test consisted of the mechanic checking the oil level. The first two 500 mile tests showed no oil loss while the 1,000 mile test showed it a quart down. If I do the math, it will have lost 6.5 quarts over the length of a 7,500 oil change which seems excessive to me. The Kia dealership said it is within specs for Kia but suggested I open a case with Kia anyway.

Thank you, I understand an inexpensive four cylinder vehicle with high mileage but would expect a better result than 6.5 quarts over the length of an oil change. With that consumption I would think that the oil would be basically new at all times and a change wouldn't be needed. Sounds like the dealership is being untruthful if "it is within specs ...". Please keep me in the loop with your "open case". Thanks again, G

My 2016 Sorento Burns about 6 qts between oil changes which I do every 5,000 miles. I have used synthetic oil since the first oil change and I am religious about changing the oil. I want to take it to KIA dealership but the one local to me is horrible. They actually lost “misplaced” my vehicle for a day. Blamed it on the Service Manager being on vacation. I know what they want will say about this. Current miles are 144,000 but problem started around 40,000 at about 2.5 qts between services.

I also have a 2016 Kia Sorento, and the last two oil changes which i go 5000 between each oil change I to am down to the bottom of dip stick. Went to have oil changed, they suggested i use the mid range synthetic oil, that i would have less burning of oil using the higher grade of oil. This just stated at 70,000 did not have this issue before. Now at 78,300 on mileage. I will check it more often on this synthetic oil and see if it makes a difference??

I have 2012 KIA Sorento with 96,000 miles. Suddenly Started loosing oil, 1 quart every 500 miles, after jumping through all if the hoops KIA replaced the engine yesterday. I credit the dealer who finally told the KIA Rep "you guys need to step up to the plate and do something". They did. BE PERSISTANT!

We are dealing with the SAME issues! 107k miles, a quart+ every 3-500 miles. Dealer says it's within specs. I've NEVER heard of an engine do that. Oh, this was after they said it was not affected by the service campaign for 2.4L engines (97k mi). At 101K miles after oil change and more oil consumption, they claim it was the VC gasket, at $400+. Past the warranty, of course. Opening up a case with KIA Consumer has so far not gotten me very far. It's been 6k miles and many months of frustration, and still no resolution. Might be time to lawyer up.

We ended up trading our 2016 Kia for GMC Terrain this week. our KIA dealership pretended to know nothing about this oil issue told me I was out of warranty to. Just traded it, not dealing with it or KIA anymore.

Just completed second 500 mile oil consumption test at dealer, 1.2 qts low . Returning next week and if low again they are filing a report with Kia warranty

My dealer did the same and found the same, but they basically said we're SOL since they didn't note the excessive oil consumption until after 101k miles, 1,000 miles beyond the powertrain warranty. Even though we mentioned it when we brought the car in for the engine recall at 96k miles.

The Kia dealership says I have to replace the engine. burning up oil from Full to Low in 700 miles. They said the "filed a claim" with Kia by sending diagnostics from my car to Kia about the latest recall, and they said Kia denied claim. Dealership also says "it is normal to burn 1 quart of oil in 1000 miles." The Sorento has never burned oil before, until 103,000 -106,000, these last 3 months. I feel certain it is all related to defective engine manufacturing. Some cars were given extended warranties of upto 150,000 miles on engines - apparently not mine, even through it was in the recall. I am collecting records and I will keep on Kia as long as it takes.

I am the original owner of a 2012 Kia Sorrento. Took for a routine oil change in September and was told there was no oil in it; never had an oil light come on. Went back in November after 3,000 miles and it was fine. My oil light came on this morning and there is no oli in it. My husband added 3 quarts and light is still on. My car only has 61,000 miles on it!! I feel like Kia will do nothing and hate to have car payments again.

I have a 2104 Sorento. No work was done per the recall. In August I realized the oil is disappearing. No indicator lights came on and there was basically no oil. Now I’m adding constantly. There is no sign of a leak and no smoke from the exhaust either. Where is the oil going? My car has been at the dealership for three days now and they said it’s not an issue covered under any recall. They are saying it’s pistons or piston rings( waiting on a call back to get the full info)

My daughter bought a 2017 sportage with 50,000 miles on it and it uses alot of oil but it under the kia guideline. .85 of a quart ever 1000 miles but it getting worse. Kia has gave us the run around and won't fix it. We have to take it to the dealership ever 1000 miles to get topped off. Been there 8 or 9 times. Probably should just let it blow up. # HATEKIA

I have a 2012 Kia Sorento with 150k km and at about the 130k it’s been burning a lot of oil. Down 2.5 litres of oil at 2500. So around one litre per 1000k.

Random oil consumption. After 1000 miles, 1/4 qt down Another 1000 miles, 1/8 qt down. Another 1000 miles 1 1/4 qt down. Another 5000 miles, 3 1/2 qts down... The GDI engine as well as others, have e defective connecting rod at manufacturing. There is a likely connection between the defect and oil consumption. Advice, if Kia will not replace the engine block, write Kia and express concern over the legal issues concerning losing a life due to engine and connecting rod malfunction. It may not only be YOU that is injured or killed, but an innocent party.

We bought a 2015 Kia Sorento with 64+I miles and my husband told the dealership people about the burning oil problem, wrote down a list of tasks to be done to the car before taking out of their shop... they did everything but the burning oil issue. The car is burning a lot of oil, my husband called them up... now they're saying that the car warranty is 60000 miles instead of 100,000 they told us 2 years ago. We had to get an extended warranty insurance and as soon as it starts we're taking it to the dealership in order to fix it (which I doubt), then get another car.... never ever another Kia.

Same problem here. I have a Kia Sorento 2013. The engine burns all the oil I put in. I have made my mechanic check and there is no leakage or so ever. Honestly Kia should do something abt it.

Same problem. 2013 Sorento 2.4. Have always had Mobil 1 full synthetic in it since the first oil change. I do all the oil changes and 90% of the repairs on all 4 of our family vehicles and have for 30 years. Been changing the synthetic in the Sorento every 5-6k. At 66k on the original motor, the motor locked up. Just stopped. No warning. Oil level was fine. Never lost/burned any oil up till that point. This happened just before the recall. Kia tried to claim it was bad oil initially, but when I inspected the motor at the dealer with the mechanic and the tech, there was ZERO sludge and ZERO evidence of lack of maintenance - obviously, because Mobil 1 is not going to cause oil related failures when changed as often as I have and do. Anyhow, they installed a new motor for free under warranty, and I've put another 58k (124k on the vehicle now) on the new motor, again, always Mobil 1 full synthetic every 5-6k. So I'm changing the oil yesterday and discover I'm down 2 quarts. First time for that. It was typical to be down maybe 1/2 quart every 5-6k with both motors. Zero signs of leaks, so obviously now I'm burning oil like everyone else in here. What I don't see is anyone talking about trying a thicker viscosity oil, like maybe 5w30 instead of the 5w20. Has anyone tried that? Back in my youth as a motorcycle mechanic, I worked on a lot of Harleys. It was common to run straight 60w or 70w oil to keep the old shovelheads from burning and leaking all their oil. IF the Kia issue truly is piston rings, or even valve seals for that matter, then heavier oil should at least slow down the burning process. Feel fee to email me at (no spaces) p s u c h a r s k i @ t d s.net if you want to discuss ideas. Thanks.

Same issue as all of you above. Has anyone been through the process with success in getting Kia to cover this under a recall? I went to Kia last week and one of the workers said, "yes there is a possibility that your vehicle can fall under the recall for the burning oil issue." I went in yesterday for what I thought was to start the process and I was told def not - Kia will not cover the burning oil issue at all, there is no sense in opening a case and that I need a new engine. I am SOOOO UPSET!!

2016 Sorento - mine is doing it too. I first noticed when I executed a fast stop and the oil light blinked on and off a couple times. 53K miles. It's been religiously cared for and the oil changed every 5000 miles since I bought it. I see no evidence of a leak or burning oil, and it runs fine.

I posted earlier, Kia Sorento 2014 burning up entire oil tank in 600 miles. Dealership said all the valve seals were bad at 105,000. I had to put in a new (used) engine, which of course falls under the same engine manufacturing problem recalls as the origin. I applied to Kia Consumer Affairs, I sent in documentation, the problem was diagnosed exactly 30 days after my 100,000 mile extended warranty ended. Kia Skillman Indiana dealership denied my request for reimbursement, and some people there even told me that most Sorento engines are failing right about 100,000 miles. I asked for my claim to reviewed by Kia Consumer, and they did, and say they also deny my request for reimbursement. The person claimed "she talked to engineers" and excessive oil use is not related to the oil passageway defective machining in the factory. BS

My 2014 Kia sorento started burning oil at 76,000 miles. It's at 83,000 now. have to put 5 quarts in it between oil changes. I'm seriously thinking of talking to a lawyer about a class action suit against Kia! This is ridiculous! Look at the 100s of people who have posted this problem! Can you imagine how many are out there that havent posted? I'll keep everyone updated!

I have a 2012 Kia Sorento. Took it in for engine valve recall check at 92K miles, which required the dealership to change the oil. At next oil change around 98K miles, my mechanic said there was barely a quart of oil in it. I thought the dealership made a mistake on the oil change. Mechanic recommended that I check oil in between oil changes -- checked oil at 2500 miles on oil change -- it needed 4 quarts of oil (this was the week of Christmas, btw). There are no oil leaks, oil seems to just vanish! Sorento is burning oil -- it seems to have started burning oil without warning. No warning lights for low oil have ever been displayed. Scheduled appt with dealership following week - had 101K miles on it. Have been doing an oil consumption test...every 1000 - 1500 miles. At 1000 - 1200 miles Sorento is 1.5 quarts low (2 tests). At 900 miles it was 1 quart low (1 test). Getting ready to take it in for a 4th test.

Right there with the rest of you. 2016 Kia Sorento with almost 70,000 miles on it. Burning oil faster and faster. Currently in process of doing oil consumption tests. But, I will be at the 1000 mile checkpoint while in another state visiting my mom who lives in a home with dementia for Easter. I'm not skipping a visit with my mom because of a faulty car. I was debating what to do and searched up "Kia Sorento burning oil" to find hundreds of posts on various sites of this same problem. Ridiculous. I was told 1/2 quart disappearing in 950 miles was "normal". Maybe normal for Kia but no other manufacturer. I find this frustrating as I still owe over $10,000 dollars on a 3 year old car that is burning car at alarming rates. I agree with the person who stated a class action suit is in order. I thought my problem would be covered under warranty, but after reading all the posts on the internet, I suspect that will be an uphill battle with no good outcome.

I f I would of had bad gas I imagine I couldnt have started the car and drove 30 minutes ! It was smelling like burning oil ... My car is still in their lot and I am soooo mad ! They do not want to investigate more .... We had to recall latelly with one of the valves leaking oil ! To be continued ...Should of bought a Toyota to :)

2011 kia optima lx ( GDI ) Losing about 1 quart every 1000 miles. Dealership telling me it’s normal. Thinking about leaving it idling for hours to burn more than 1 quart within 1000 miles. Normal car engine wont burn oil idling. I have owned several old cars in my student years. None of which did this. This is ridiculous. I have lifetime warranty so i’m going to keep at it with the dealership. Smh

As a follow up to my previous post, I have a 2016 Kia Sorento, that is also burning oil. Took it in for a 4th oil consumption test last week. It had been 1,700 miles since it was last topped off at the dealership, and it had consumed 3 quarts of oil. The dealership informed me...that the process has changed -- and they are not supposed to be doing the oil consumption tests anymore (so this was the last one, #4)...they are really only looking for fault code P1326 (this is related to the latest software update to the Knock Sensor Detection System). Furthermore, my dealership told me to contact Kia Affairs and open a claim (for the excessive oil consumption)...since my vehicle has not thrown the P1326 fault code, there is really nothing more they can do. Funny...when I walked into the dealership several months ago....they told me how easy it would be to have Kia replace the engine....we would do 3 oil consumption tests, they would contact Kia...and prove to them it was an issue (was told to plan this taking a full day)....then they would give me a loaner vehicle while they replaced the engine. Now, it's up to me to contact Kia Affairs. I suspect Kia Affairs will do nothing about this! I commented to the dealership, that customers are the ones getting screwed. He told me, "mam, I understand your frustration. But, I'm only an employee, I don't make the cars." Nice. It's ridiculous this vehicle is burning a quarter of oil every 500 miles. It barely has 100K miles on it. Never again. I will never, ever purchase another Kia again. Fair warning. Don't do it, run far away from Kia.

2012 Kia Sorento using 2-3 quarts of oil a month. No sign of an oil leak or of burning oil. Vehicle was going dead every 2-3 miles. Kia Dealer kept car several days and charged me for an alternator. Vehicle still going dead every few miles, Kia Dealer said high pressure fuel pump. Changed fuel pump...Vehicle still going dead. So after spending about $1200 at the dealer with no results, I fixed the issue with a $7 PCV valve. Vehicle runs fine, but still uses a lot of oil.

I have a 2012 Kia Sorento LX with 125,000 miles on it. It burns at least 2 quarts of oil per tank of gas. I was told by the dealer that the engine needs to be replace. We have had the engine service as recommended by the manufacturer. This engine should not have gone bad in 125,000 miles. I filed a complaint with NHTSA and recommend that other Kia owners with this problem do the same. Since this company is refusing to do the right thing on their own, maybe the United States Government can get this company to do the right thing.

I'm having the same issue and I've had a bad experience with the service department at my local dealer ship. I smell something fishy going on and I don't like it. I drive a 2013 Optima and recently had an oil change. When they went to change my oil, they told me that the car was unusually low on oil. I didn't think anything of it, and went about my normal habits. 2000 miles later, I took my car in because my tire was leaking air. I wasn't due for an oil change, but when they checked the oil, it was nearly empty. They checked for leaks, but said that everything was fine. I told them that everything was not fine because a car should not burn through nearly all of it's oil within 2k miles. They told me they could run an oil consumption test, but that it would be an ongoing process to get the results and that even then, Kia likely wouldn't pay to have the issue fixed. The tech said that they would just replace the engine when it failed and he actually recommended that I intentionally blow up the engine so that Kia would replace it!! Wtf?! My tech told me that he had gotten several other complaints reporting the same issue, but there was nothing they could do. While I was in the waiting room, an older lady was having the same issue with her car, but they told her that they could take apart her engine to try to find the issue but it would cost her thousands of dollars.. I interrupted and asked why I had been told something completely different. The tech guy nervous and said that he was just relaying what he had been told. I don't know what's going on, but this issue seems widespread and Kia needs to fix it. I'm going yo call another dealership with better service to see what they tell me about the issue.

I have 2016 Kia Sorento, over a year ago started the fiasco of taking to dealer for burning oil. Sadly today my son driving to work said light came on and knocking. They replaced oil sending sensor less than month ago, dye tested for leaks several months ago, blamed Jiffy lube, and today towed to dealership. Certain after reading this engine needs replaced. This started prior to 50,000 miles, still not to 100,000. Dealership stated after sensor they were no longer responsible! Furious, and still owe on it. Any actions I can take please share, I’ll follow up.

My 2013 Kia Sorento with 94,000 miles is consuming 1 1/2 quarts of oil every 300 miles. After bringing it in several times for consumption tests, Kia is saying it appears I have been tampering with the oil and somehow taking oil out. They replaced the pvc valve today and said that it should fix the problem. Now I have to do 2 more additional 1,000 mile tests. I can’t even check the oil in between times because they have put a special paint on it to detect if it is tampered with. Wish the first tests would have had the paint so I would have that in the record. I guess it’s just cross my fingers and pray I don’t run out of oil. It infuriates me that they have no regard to my safety, my children’s safety, or anyone else on the road that I may encounter if my car suddenly locks up.

(Commuting about 1hr to and from work currently) even when I was just riding around town I needed to add 2 qts every week. Sometimes it smokes. My oil light NEVER comes on even when its empty! I have a 2016 Kia Sorrento. Having the same issues for about three months now. prior to this issue we were having an issue with the car making a very loud noise from the front and kia said there was nothing wrong with it. Took it for an oil change, the tech said there was NO oil at all. We have the changed the oil every 5000 miles with Synthetic. We have taken it twice to have them check at 500 miles. No lights ever came on, i drive back and forth in Houston Traffic , i am surprised the car never locked up with NO OIL! We took it back this past Saturday and the oil was low again at 1000 miles. The dealership still has the car and the motor ripped apart because they cant figure out the problem. They have contact KIA and we are waiting to hear back if they will replace the engine. I sure hope they do.

I have a 2016 Kia Soul. I had the recall performed. Shortly after the recall, I noticed my check engine oil light quickly flash on and then off again. When I checked, there was no oil. I took it to Kia a few days later and they started doing oil consumption tests. They told me not to add any oil, and had me bring it in every 1,000 miles. Each time, I took a picture of my dip stick, and each time they told me my engine was consuming oil within specs. Today was my third oil consumption test. Before I went in, I took a picture and it was on “L.” The advisor took me outside (away from other customers) to go over the results of the test. She said cars typically consume about 1/4 oil every 3,000 miles. She said I should be fine and there was nothing wrong with my car. I cannot believe Kia would lie to me or treat their customers like this. I will never, ever do business with them again. Is anyone else having the same issue AFTER having the recall performed?

My 2016 Kia Sorrento 2.4 GDI engine 4 cylinders, was consuming 1/4 oil every 3000 miles, I did like 3 oil consumption test in different s dealers all of them told me that was over the Kia specs!! I dont believe that, suddenly my vehicle started to consume much more gas as well like 18 MPG for being a 4 cyl !!!!!!! and I notice lost of power as well. Then told me that my computer needed a software update to avoid the engine to blown. I took it to Kia dealer they did the update, and after 10,000 miles at 71,000 miles exactly my engine had a hole in the block which made my engine blown. Somehow I took it to the dealer and they honor it warranty and replaced the engine, no questions asked in 8 days i had my SUV back. For me was a time record to get my vehicle back with new engine. Still Im looking to trade in for a different brand. Goodbye Kia

I recently had to have the motor replaced in my 2016 Kia Optima, it was burning over a quart of oil every 1000 miles. I was approximately five thousand miles past the warranty but the work was free of charge. The dealer had me do three oil comsumption tests first time 1quart per 1000 miles, next 1.2 quarts per 1000 miles 3rd time 1.6 quarts. I would advise you to take it in and protest that exactly what I did. It was a hassle but saved me a lot of money.

We’ve been to the dealership 8 times (2015 Kia Sorento). What a great reliable car they choose to stand behind of. Oil leak after oil leak “COME ON KIA OWN UP TO YOUR MISTAKE AND FIX OUR CARS”!!! I guess you’re waiting on a major fatal fire or something but wait that already happened.... smdh

Yup just another upset customer with Kia! Trust me it will happen and ours was before warranty and it didn’t smoke before. The last dealership visit they honored the last recall but after them taking off the manifold, I’m pretty sure they didn’t replace the $16 gasket and now it’s smoking from the top and side. Just keep an eye on it and stay safe with it. Something we shouldn’t have to worry about but good luck my friend!

We bought a new 2017 Kia Sportage with the 2.4l and it's been using oil since last year. It now has 24,000 miles on it (still under warranty) and the dealership has done 3 oil consumption test already but like everyone else here, saying it's normal usage. B.S.!! Engines don't burn thru 1.4 quarts of oil in 3000 miles unless there is a problem. We have had the oil changed at the dealership every 5k miles since we bought it however it cannot make it to the 5k service without having to have oil added in between. We opened a case with Kia affairs and they too are saying it's normal and will not repair the engine. What good is a 100,000 miles warranty if they are not going to honor it?? Me and my wife then opened up a case with the Better Business Bureau however they told us Kia is NOT guilty of not honoring their warranty as Kia's "Tech's" say the oil usage is within Kia spec's. A lawsuit needs to be done. Never will we own another Kia!!

I have a 2012 Kia Sorento and I burning through oil. I was just told I need a new engine but it would not be covered. I called Kia and they said to get a second opinion. My engine is getting worse in the meantime and it concerns me to drive it. From a quart after 800 miles to 2.5 quarts after 950 miles in only a couple of months. I filed a complaint with NHTSA and recommend others do the same. Engines have been catching fire and there is a new class action lawsuit.

I just got off the phone with Kia after completing my third visit for the oil consumption monitoring as I was losing 1-1/2 quarts of oil in 650 miles. My car is a 2011 Optima with only 63K miles on it now. This has been going on for the last 10K miles and only getting worse. Jacob at Kia said that my engine is out of standard manufacture warranty and any diagnostics to figure out what the problem is would be an out of pocket expense. If my engine rod bearings went out then it would be covered under their recall warranty but that is only if the bearings went out. So basically they wan't me to find out the problem at my expense so they can relay that info onto other shops to avoid another class action lawsuit and recall. They said they have investigated this plenty of other times and that some of the instances required the engine to be replaced but he wouldn't tell me what the underlying cause was. Kia knows this is an issue and even their own representatives on the phone as well as service staff at the dealership know this is an issue as they all told me so. They just don't want to be on the hook for fixing it; most likely since a class action lawsuit hasn't been filed yet that I am aware of. I could tell Jacob was just regurgitating their standard warranty policy and even tried to throw in that if anything other than the rod bearings were the cause for this issue, then it would be considered normal engine wear and I would be responsible for the costs. I told him that an engine failing under 100K is not normal engine wear especially at 60K miles! I'm not happy with Kia for not owning their design/manufacturing mistakes and correcting them and would never consider purchasing another Kia or Hyundai again as this has been our second of their vehicles.

Update: I posted in here a few months back. 2013 Sorento with the 2.4 GDI. Original motor seized up without warning a couple years ago just shy of 60k. Got that motor replaced under warranty. Replacement motor started consuming oil (about a quart every 1500 miles) after just over 60k (on that motor, 120-something on the vehicle). I do all the maintenance myself. Nothing but Mobil 1 full synthetic in this Kia since new. Ran the 5w20 it calls for, and after the oil consumption started I switched to Mobil 1 5w30 + a bottle of STP oil treatment (thick as molasses). Since doing this the oil consumption slowed to about a quart every 3-4k. I should also mention that when it's down on oil, I top it off with 10w30. Basically just keeping the oil a bit thicker so it's not disappearing like it was before. I'm guessing this probably doesn't help fuel economy, but I haven't had time to pay attention, and my wife drives this POS Kia anyhow. I drive 4.0L Jeeps that actually do run forever :) . My email is psucharski@tds.net if anyone cares to share notes or ask questions.

2014 Kia Sportage - just ran an oil consumption test. In two weeks, 1,000 miles, it lost a quart of oil. Dealership claims there's an oil leak but there's no oil on the driveway or anywhere I park. We've been putting oil in it every other week or so since June.
