2004

Asked by ValoranGreySteed Feb 26, 2018 at 08:57 PM about the 2004 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport

Question type: Car Customization

This is all hypothetical, as I don't have the vehicle
nor the parts. First I need to know if the 2004
Subaru Impreza comes with a 2.2 engine. As far as
I can tell they only come with the 2.5 originally.
From what I've seen the 2.2 is more resilient than
the 2.5. what I want to know is if it's possible to
have a 2.2 engine in an 04 Subaru Impreza outback
sport?

2002-2011 Imps came with the resilient 2.5i. The ONLY failure point was the head gaskets, which were replaced with a sturdier 3-ply gasket set starting in 2010 production. So an older 2.5i with new gaskets will be fine. The older 2.2i suffers from major oil leaks and much less torque with no eco benefit. So just get a 2.5i and enjoy it. Note also that 2002-3, 4-5, and 6-7 are essentially clone sets. The newer the Imp the better the interior quality.

That makes a lot of sense. Thank you I appreciate the help! I'm not really a mechanic nor do I have much knowledge on the subject so finding info like this is of great help. Thanks again.
