all cars since the "80s have done this; manual or automatic.

I don’t believe so, on all the cars I have had and worked on the steering wheel never locked when the engine is not running, it only locked after the key was removed. But I have never checked a Mini Cooper.

Assumptions; assumptions..... I had assumed he meant after the key was out of the ignition. Don't you just get sick of these inane questions: Why won't my car start? Why won't my transmission shift? Why don't the lights work? Will a dryer fit in my pint-size POS? Will a car run if I dump Jack Daniels in the tank?

These doofuses canceled my account "accidently" a month ago, and I was just ready to abandon this. I think, when answers don't post, it's due to the response being too log or too much punctuation. Write literately and see if that fixes it.

This started happening when I hit over 200000 in response numbers.

Sorry if I was unclear and my question came across as inane. The car has a keyless ignition, so my question remains, does the steering wheel lock when the keyless ignition is turned off (button pushed). The owners’ manual doesn’t address it and it’s difficult to tell if it’s locked or simply hard to turn without power steering being engaged.
