2015 Buick Encore catalytic converter / Check Engine light

Asked by TonyS7 Jan 01, 2024 at 09:50 PM about the 2015 Buick Encore AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I recently had my catalytic converter replaced, with an aftermarket one.  I have also had an oxygen sensor replaced already.  But I still keep getting the Check Engine light, relating to the catalytic converter.  One problem has been a hole in the weld.  I have taken it back to where I got the catalytic converter, and they have been nice enough to try and fix it.  But also, there was a technical service bulletin regarding this situation.  The Check Engine light still comes on, because there is something it doesn't like about the aftermarket catalytic converter.  The solution is to have software re-downloaded.  I have done that, but the Check Engine light STILL comes on.  If I have the weld fixed AGAIN, will I need to have the software re-downloaded AGAIN ?

When replacing the catalytic converter the first thing you need to do is check the emissions decal under the hood. If your Buick has California Emissions a Federal Emissions converter will not work! Even if the vehicle was not originally delivered to California it may still have California Emissions. My 2000 Grand Prix was originally delivered to New Jersey and has California Emissions, my 2003 S10 Pick Up was originally delivered to Delaware and has California Emissions, but my 2008 Grand Marquis, also originally delivered to New Jersey, has Federal Emissions. If your emissions decal says "C.A.R.B. compliant" or "Conforms to California Emissions Standards" you have California Emissions. If the decal says "EPA compliant" or "Conforms to Federal Emissions Standards" you do not have California Emissions. If the shop sold you the wrong converter, they need to make it right. Hope that helps! Jim
