97 should have push button 4x4 capable of going from 2hi to 4hi at speeds up to 55mph and 4lo must be engaged while the gear selector is in nuetral at a stop or at a slow roll. Disengage the same way you engaged it

operating the lever is the same as the push buttom but instead of pushing a button you move a lever
