Why are my brakes grinding AFTER leaving the mechanic?

I took my car to the shop for some basic
maintenance including an oil change and
some new headlights.  They called and said I
need new brakes which surprised me
because I have never has problems braking
and my car was recently serviced prior to
this.  Ever since i picked up my car the
brakes have been grinding almost every time
I stop.  The shop refuses to take a second
look or consider that the car was not like
this before.  Is it possible that they screwed
up my vehicle somehow intentionally?   Why
are the brakes making all this noise and they
were not before?

It might be coincidence but if they never pointed it out at the shop and called you, more and likely, they're setting it up to be brought in again. That's not replaced by mileage like oil so calling you and telling you it's due is not how it should be, they should be checked on any servicing and if they're bad, the car should not be sent away without consulting the driver on the issue.
