AC blower has a mind of it's own....

Asked by 2tall4u Jun 02, 2018 at 10:42 AM about the 2014 RAM 1500 Laramie Longhorn Crew Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2014 Dodge ram 1500 Ecodiesel Laramie Longhorn. AC
blower works sometimes and sometimes not. Fusses and
relays are good. It's been on 2 different scans and both
passed with no faults. AC was not blowing when we did the
scan. Everyone telling me to replace the resistor. Come to
find out from the dealer the resistor is inside the blower
motor. So I replaced the blower motor. Still not working.
Any help you can advise me on comes with many thanks.

We had/have again same problem with a 2015 Dodge Ram 1500 Lonestar Edition. We ended up taking it back to the dealer we bought it from after leaving it for repair with the local dealer 4 times. We were told it was the relay switch to the fan. It would blow air when it wants to. Doesn’t matter what kind of air - hot cold outside etc.

So after posting this looking for answers, I youtubed it again and found a video suggesting to check the 40 amp fuse. So I went out and pulled the fuse. See photo....burnt just enough to short out the motor to work off and on. The spare 40 amp fuses were both missing. Hmmmmmm. 5 dollar fix. Hope it helps.

Had the same issue with my 2013 Ram 1500 Sport 4wd. Has happened twice and ended up being the tipm. Internally a relay goes bad slowly and starts burning fuses to the ac blower. Ended up paying for it around $1k then happened again within the two year warranty. Now its starting to do the same symptoms again. " A/C Blower motor works most of the time but randomly it doesn't. He goes another $1Ik. Not sure why the sourc3 of the issue cannot b edd solved.

Mine started doing this a few days ago. Replaced blower w/ resistor and still intermittently comes on. Not sure a fuse is whats causing this issue. Typically when a fuse is bad, its bad forever. Only other thing I would think it the rheostat on the speed controller may be going out. If that's the case then you'd need to replace that. I'm hoping thats not the case because I hate taking apart instrument bezels.

I'll do some more digging later. Not to sound like a smart ass but anytime an electrical issue occurs is either from the element itself or the circuit supplying power. Still not sure on this one guys. Apologies.

I fixed mine without installing a 3rd tipm. 1 of the harness the plugs into the tipm has a thick blue wire for the ac blower motor. The connector on the harness does not squeeze the male tab on the tipm causing resistance and heat. In can also start melting the harness plug. Electrician pulled the wire from the harness, closed the tab so it can squeeze the tab on the tipm and the problem was solved. Oz the mechanic has the video on YouTube. Hope this helps

By the way it was a master Electrician that fixed my truck. It helped that I told him about the wire because he was about to diagnose the tipm again. Once he saw the loose connection on the tab, he realized there was a resistance issue because of the loose connection. I have not had the issue in over a month and this was happening every other day before that.

Would you be willing to provide a link on a video for that TIPM you’re referring to?

I just hope people don't have to spend the amount of money I spent to solve a $100 issue. Replacing tipms are costly especially when done at the dealer like I did.

Update: I pulled the 40A fuse for the blower motor on Friday and cleaned the contacts real well. Been working like a champ ever since.

WOW. Here I was thinking I was about to lose my truck and have to deal with a dealership for 3 days. Messed with the relay and connector and my fan is working again. I need to pull the connector from underneath and make it tighter.

2018 Ram Sport 4wd, had the same issue with the a/c working not working. I pulled the TIPM and sure enough the blue wire was looser than should be. Made tighter connection and at first it appears to have solved the problem. Started blowing right away no issues, has been good for about 2 months now ac operating as it should etc. However the other day came out started it and no air blowing. It’s done it twice now here in the same week. Usually just turn the ac off for a few minute and then back on seems to retrip it to start blowing. Been good for another week now no issues so while I do feel the blue wire connection is an issue not sure why it would be causing me grief again. Will try that clean the fuse contact real good next in hopes the problem doesn’t resurface. Just sharing my experience. Will try to update in a month or two how it’s going.

I have a 2015 Ram that the blower motor didnt work in colder tempatures. Done all basic checks, powers, grounds, etc. However when testing powers and ground at tipm and reinstalling relay motor would come on and off. removed tipm and found corroded and 2 loose terminals, Cleaned and tightened terminals and all is good.

Re-visting to say this thread saved my grandmother thousands of dollars in A/C diagnostics. My grandmother told me she was having trouble with the air blowing and then stopping in her 2013 Ram 1500. I changed the blower motor resistor since that's typically the first place you start. Same day she told me it was still giving her trouble. I am glad I ran across this page because the video recommended by OZ the Mechanic is exactly what was wrong with her truck. Pulled the TIPM and the blue blower motor power wire was piping hot. Took the plug out and sure enough, melted through the plastic around the connector, much worse than the video OZ posted. Tightened the connection up and problem solved. Thanks to everyone involved in this thread, you are the real MVPs.
