Variable assist codes 3
There are no codes for the power assist. this what I found on the subject.
"PINPOINT TEST B: DTC 16, 17 OR 18�STEERING VERY DIFFICULT/VERY EASY B10 CHECK RESISTANCE ACROSS ACTUATOR VALVE - Ignition switch in OFF position. - Locate the control module behind glove compartment. Harness connector(s) can be disconnected from module without removing module. - Using an ohmmeter, measure resistance across Pin C215-14 (�Connector�), Circuit 87 (T/Y) and Pin C215-26 (�Connector�), Circuit 86 (GY/O) (with air suspension), Pin C214-14 (�Connector�), Circuit 87 (T/Y) and Pin C214-13 (�Connector�), Circuit 86 (GY/O) (without air suspension) of harness connector. Resistance should be 7-18 ohms. If the resistance is greater than 1000 ohms, the circuit is open."
Check with the Ford Dealer it looks like there may have been a recall or a TSB back then, the dealer will be able to tell you by the vin. As far as disabling power assist believe me you wouldn't want too it would make the car almost impossible to steer.
