can you put an erg valve upside down on 1988 s-10 blazer with 4.3 l engine

I replaced the ERG valve on a 1988 S-10 Blazer with the 4.3 liter engine. it would barely run after I did this. I took it to a repair shop and they told me I put it on upside down. is this possible ?
