What is the average gas mileage for an 4cyl 3.1 automatic?

I am getting 25-28 mpg city in my Geo.Is this normal or can I improve my mileage somehow?
I thought Geo's got better than that.

Perhaps a tuneup and a new air filter, but that mileage is good for an automatic. Manual trans got higher mpg.

the 4 cyl have 20 more horse power than the 3 cyl but also get 20 less mpg its a trade
