Ford ranger 302 oil pressure

My dad has a ford ranger 306 tubbed out. The oil
pressure gauge is reading 40 when he is driving but
when he comes to a stop light in first gear and
idling it drops right down to 0 on the gauge. We
have replaced the filter and the oil and it is still
doing it... What is the next step we need to do.
