I have a 1985 F150 automatic and the top starter point keeps breaking. Any ideas which could fix this problem.

Asked by Devin_Hamby0128 Feb 20, 2017 at 02:10 PM about the 1985 Ford F-150 XL Extended Cab 4WD LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I took my truck in for an alignment then the top mounting point in the starter
broke. We replaced it about two weeks ago and it broke the same way again.
Any resolutions.

What do you mean starter top mounting point. You mean the ear or tab when the bolt goes through to hold starter in place? If it's shearing off and part of the bolt is still in the transmission housing, it could be because you are over tightening it, it should be 18 ft/lbs. or wrong grade of bolt, should be minimum grade 5. If it's not shearing off but the threads are stripping, you could have bad threads in the transmission housing

Oh ok then you probably have an uneven surface. Look for some type of build up or debris between starter and bell housing
