96 TSI AWD; Gear Shifter/Stick

Gear shifter/stick has become extremely loose, and it's even become difficult to
put it into any gear other than 1st. I can't even "find" 3rd or any higher gear, and
putting it into reverse takes anywhere from 30 seconds to 3 minutes. I'm not
entirely sure what the problem is, though it feels like a "plate" or something
beneath the housing of the exterior stick is loose or broken. Anybody had this
problem before, or understand what it is?

im having the same issue man! i am almost 100% its the whole tranny ive been told by abunch of dumb ass honda fags its my clutch tho but im not thinking so cause my shifter will do this with it not running as well mines hard going into 1st gear takes about 15-60 seconds to get it into 1st! hope this helps you some what good luck with it

Sounds like the shifter cables are shot, at the end of the cables there are rubber and or polyurethane bushings the bushings wear out over time mine did the same thing , shifter gets sloppy as hell then hard to get in to any gear. Could also be a broken or loose cable mounting bracket and or the U clips that hold the cables on are broken and or missing causing the cable to shift forwaard and rearward, but would say check the bushingsfirst, more than likely the problem.
