Question type: Maintenance & Repair

2013 Toyota Camry ..the timing chain slipped while my son
was driving. One mechanic says it needs a new motor another
says it needs a new timing chain and to drive it. I googled the
question which made it sound like it is probably gonna need
new motor but not always certain. My son said it died
immediately ..has anyone had this happen and did it damage
the whole motor.

I think what they're talking about is an interference motor where the piston may hit an open valve if the timing belt breaks .

That's exactly what they're saying. The best thing to do is visit your local Toyota Dealer with your VIN and they can tell you if you have an interference engine or not. If you do have an interference engine, junk it. In my opinion it's not worth fixing. But if you don't have an interference engine have the repairs made and continue on your way. The first thing to do if you suspect a jumped timing chain is a compression test. If all cylinders test very low or zero the timing chain has jumped. But if you have good compression, it's not the timing chain. Hope that helps! Jim
