It is acceptable to use 5W-40 synghetic or 15W-40 conventional oils if the oil has a “C” rating, indicating a compression ignition engine. An “S” rating is for spark ignition (usually gasoline) engines. The “C” rating is important. There are lots of good oils out there, and I use the Shell Rotella T6 in both of my vehicles, a Dodge Cummins with 398,000 on the odometer, and an 87 Golf with more, and neither has blow-bye or uses oil between changes. I am an Alaskan, and the synthetics work well for me in winter, and summer if I go out to the lower 48 towing a trailer in summer heat.
