Car won't start

My car cranks but won't turn over. It smells like
gas. I thought it might be the timing belt but I'm not
sure how to tell. What could the problem be?

I also tried uploading a video but for some reason it didn't work. But anyway the car makes a kind of clicking noise as it cranks. It sounds like it's about to turn over but it never does. Exhaust comes out of the exhaust pipe. Earlier today it used to make a kind of revving noise as if a belt or something slipped or something because I would be would the key down and it would be cranking then all of a sudden a revving sound would happen and my car would stop cranking and then after a second or two it would start cranking again. But that was a few hours ago and now it doesn't do that.
