My Ford 150 2013, gave me a low oil pressure reading then completely
stopped in the middle of the road. Since then off and on it wont start. It does
crank but wont start. Not getting any check engine lights at all. I have to wait
a couple hrs then it will start. need help

Change the oil sending unit,it may be bad and causing this,it will shut down the fire from engine from a false reading.

I replaced my oil sending unit, but I am still having the same issue at random times when I'm driving. Remedied by turning off and back on. What should be next fix?

What was your solution? My truck is at the dealership now, low oil pressure light came on but no troubles... they say I need a new engine (9,000) 2012 F 150 125k miles

I resorted to the dealership after replacing the sending unit didn't fix the problem. They ended doing a fuse relocation on the fuse related to my fuel pump which they said is why my truck would lose power after the low oil pressure message. Truck has been fine ever since they finished, seems to have fixed the problem!

Same thing. At a stop sign and the low oil message flashed across my dash and then my truck turned off. My local Ford dealership said they had never heard of this and that unless they can mimic the event, I am out of luck.

I've been dealing with this issue for a couple months. The truck will start up and drive, but at a stop light, or drive through, or anywhere slow, it will stall out. Mechanic says that oil sending unit won't usually help this issue. We've been able to go without stalling, by replacing a quart of oil with some sort of thickener. So, even after driving for long periods it hasn't stalled. Apparently, this is a very common issue with this engine. He said between early 2000's and maybe 2013??

I took my 2013 F-150 truck to the dealership (a new dealership that bought my usual dealership) to get an oil change before an out of town trip. It did this exact same thing out of town. I thought maybe it was a fluke. Then it did it again a few weeks later. Now, it did it again today, 6/9/19. I'll be messaging the dealership. I never had this problem before the dealership changed my oil. I know the picture shows the oil arrow all the way on "L", but only because the truck stalled. Once I restart it, it leans more towards "H".

Just wanted to add and update on a temporary fix that worked for us so far. Our mechanic replaced one quart of oil with an oil thickener. So far that's helped us and we haven't had any stalling at all. It was worse in the winter, but it's been fine this summer. I do live in SD though, so it's not insanely hot. That might make a difference.

I'm pretty sure I have the answer to all these stalls. In the interim though, I took it to a mechanic and he replaced the sending unit (or something to that effect) and when I left there, it stalled at the very next light. (eye roll) In the meantime I received ANOTHER recall from Ford. I had the original Powertrain recall done at the same time I had the oil changed .... then I received notice for the 19S19 Recall because the software did not update correctly. If you Google Powertrain Control Module issues ... 1 of the issues is ENGINE STALLING! You also might notice you're eating a lot of gas! I haven't been able to take mine in to fix the recall ON the recall, but planning to get in as soon as possible. Yes. My truck still dies after idling a bit.

I have a 2016 F150 with the same issue and the check engine light is on so I’ll have it checked out. To keep the warning light off or when it comes on I put the truck in neutral when slowing down I think that helps. Not a mechanic

My mechanic find the failing purge valve to blame for after the smoke test on my 2010 f150. It could cause problem over stalling and rough start.

I am having similar issues 2012 5.0L V8. dealership is calling mine a “rough idle.” 1st i replaced ignition coils and plugs per diagnostic check at auto zone. first time i took it in to dealership the said its was mass air flow sensor and bad gas. i replaced the sensor not the gas (i didnt think that to be the issue). sensor did not help. replaced throttle body, canister vapor purge valve. nothing helped. took it back to dealership. they insisted it was the gas. gas fouled plugs and they replaced that and cleaned entire fuel system. truck does run better but still has low idle and thus tripping the low oil pressure sensor. my question is do you have same idle problems? any input would be appreciated. thanks!

i must also say that truck was stalling as well. not if you cold start it and let idle. but if you hit the accelerator and let off it would stall. shifting to nuetral andkeeping rpms kept it from stalling

@snanez25 That's the exact issue we had. The mechanic said that as the oil heats up, it becomes thinner and harder to maintain oil pressure. That's why he replaced one quart of oil with an oil thickener. He said it's a temporary fix. There way he explained it to me was that the oil sending unit bring replaced wouldn't matter in our case, and that the only other option after a thickener, is to replace the entire engine. I haven't taken it in for a second opinion yet, because it hasn't happened since May. He said these trucks are super sensitive though, and have to have super consistent and regular maintenance. (That is not something we're good at) We bought this truck used though, so I'm not sure how it was cared for before us. I have no idea if any of this helps. I'm a huge advocate for trying the oil thickener though, because it's such an easy and cheap option to try first. In our case, it's all that we needed to do.

thanks for the response! oil thickness suggestion does seem to make sense. i am very consistent with oil maintenance. i did wait too long for tune up but doubt that is causing such issues. is yours throwing codes? mine had p0171 too lean bank 1 and p2196 p2198 pre converter o2 sensors. the stalling issue is gone for now. just a low “rough” idle. so low its throwing the oil pressure sensor

2013 fx4 same problem low oil pressure light comes on at stop lights or drive through, but doesn’t stall or stop. As soon as I put on the gas it runs just fine. Always starts good and driving fine. No check engine light. Just low oil pressure. Is it safe to drive 200 miles

A buddy is mine just had this and called me. I have an 06 and it did it a couple times after an oil change. I checked the oil and realized they only put 5 quarts in so I added 2 since it needs 7 quarts and sure enough it stopped. Have t had the problem again in 7 years since I have changed my own oil.

@GuruK4723what was your fix to this? I am having this exact same issue and Im willing to put some money into the fix at the dealership but only as long as I know the money I'm spending will fix it.

unfortunately i have not found the issue. it is back in the shop now and hopefully it isnt something that is expensive. when i get more info i will share. anyone else have a solution? thanks

I just got my truck back from the dealer. turns out my low idle issue was in fact a faulty tachometer (go figure). i got to spend some time with the shop foreman and he said he thinks the oil pressure drop is caused by a faulty oil sending unit, or switch, or sensor. i think those are all the same thing based on my quick internet research. i did not get it replaced mainly because i thought it would be expensive! turns out it is like a 30 min install and for parts and labor it is less than $75. if you look it up online you will find videos and info on it but basically once you find the oil sending unit check to see if there is oil on it. apparently that is an indicator that it is bad. hope this helps. thanks for your posts!

So today January 11th 2020 and I was having the same problem for the last couple days my 2012 f150 would not start. I thought maybe I didn't have enough gas. So I put more gas in it would turn over a little bit but the engine will not stay on. This morning 2 days later I called my mechanic and he asked me how my truck was part and I told him it was in my driveway which is on a slight incline, he told me to roll the truck down in the street on a flat surface and try to start the truck. He said the sensors were not picking up the oil pressure properly; and Ford makes these trucks so that they will shut off in a situation like that, so at first I was hesitant because what's going to happen if this truck is stuck in the street I can't push the stupid thing back into the driveway, and I'm in one of these ridiculous homeowner association places where I knew I would get a fine if my vehicles on the road, but anyhow I tried it. My truck is running, at least right now. I'm heading to the gas station. If it shuts down again I will post it. Note the mechanic also said that if the truck didn't start to go get a quart of oil and put in to see if that raise the pressure, but fortunately I didn't have to do that at least not yet. Hope this help somebody.

Did anyone have their oil pump checked...just saying; after so many miles, you might have a clogged pump .Why? Maybe ;if you accidentally mixed full synthetic with conventional oils....Could this cause a problem? My Son's truck(2012, 66000 5.0L) just happened today,indicator light ;low oil ,but no stalling......yet

I have the same problem and my warrantee is replacing the engine.. I guess I don’t care but can’t this be fixed easier than a entire engine replacement. If I didn’t have warrantee I’d be pissed .. 2013F150. 83000 miles

My 2012 5 litre f150 was dropping rpm’s at stop lights. Oil pressure light, warning alarm, then shutdown. Took it to Ford. They found that my independent garage had installed an oversize oil filter. They said somebody brought in a 2013 same issue. Proper oil filter solved the problem. I think it has solved mine too.

Having the same issue with my ‘12 F150 5.0. At stop lights or stop signs low oil warning sets off and as soon as I release the brake rpms jump back up and warning goes off. It has never stalled out. I’ve had the sensor replaced which worked for a bit but now it’s doing it again.

2012 F150 5.0L Problem Fixed. I changed the oil pressure sensor about 6 months ago. Stopped for a little bit then started back. Started having issues with idle so first i changed my oil pressure sensor again since it had oil on it from a rear main seal leak. Here is link to show the easiest way of doing it. https://youtu.be/uta45V4e2Mo Then had my oil changed. Brought it home and replaced the spark plugs and took the throttle body off. The throttle body I think was the cause of everything. It had a lot of build up so I cleaned it with throttle body cleaner. Do not use carborator cleaner. I heard this could ruin the coating in the throttle body. Put it back together and the idle is perfect and I havent lost oil pressure. I believe the issue with the oil pressure was from the idle dropping too low.

2013 f150, 5.0, just had the oil changed started acting up to get back to where I got the oil changed the guy put the scanner on it looks like it’s going to be the mass airflow sensor he was tapping on the mass airflow sensor it would idle back up

2012 F150 Eco Boost 77k miles. Just bought from dealership 3 weeks ago. Fresh Oil change. Low Oil pressure light has come on randomly, oil pressure guage drops to low and snaps back to high. Check engine recently came on. Checked oil levels, all seems good. Dropping off at dealership today. Will post what I hear back.

I’ve had the same issue. Started out with the truck wouldn’t start. So I started checking everything, and ended up wiggling the power distribution box and got it to start. Kept having to do that for a few weeks then got a check battery light then truck shut down with low oil pressure light. Wiggled the box again, fired it up, then went and changed the battery. Now it’s very random but it still shuts down while driving and gives me the low oil pressure light. I wiggle the box, it turns back on. Trying to find schematics so I can check wiring harness because I think it’s electrical.

I have 2013 F-150, 5.0 Gen 1 coyote engine with 120k miles. Recently at idle only and in gear not park, the low pressure warning light would come on and the gauge would go to zero similar to many comments on this thread. Here is what I found. I changed the oil pressure sending unit. When inspected i did not find oil in it which is the primary indicator that it has failed. I thought it was a low idle situation so I cleaned the throttle body as recommended. Next step was to do a manual gauge oil pressure check. Before I decided to do that I spoke with a colleague about the oil I had began using. I switched from Motorcraft semi-synthetic to Havoline full synthetic, and within 2 months of that change the first event happened. My friend is an oil engineer from a major oil company. He suggested that even though both oils are 5w-20, a viscosity variance Is allowed in the formulation of oils that could have the Havoline on the low side of 20, and the Motorcraft on the high side. Having said that I asked about changing the oil used to 5w-30 since the truck is older, and I live in central Florida. He said he absolutely agreed that would be a good idea. So, I drained the oil and replaced with Mobile 1 5w-30 full synthetic high mileage oil that I also run in my 2003 Vette and no more low oil pressure issue. This may not be the solution for everyone, but think about what oil you are using and the possibility that the tolerance that the oil you are using could be slightly low in viscosity. I am getting an oil sample done to confirm.

06 F150. Truck had been mostly sitting for a few months, occasional drives around the block. Looks like there may have been a leak. we drove somewhere long distance - about a 2 hour drive and when we stopped somewhere it came on. i checked oil level and it seemed fine. drove a few mins, came to a stop light and it came on again, grabbed a quart of oil, it came on again at a stop, bought 2 more put in 1. On the way home the low oil pressure gauge thing was consistent with braking and coming to a full stop and immediately goes away when applying gas. no stalling though.

Probably the most common cause for low oil pressure in a HIGHER mileage engine (by 100K in many older V-8 American engines) has to do with WEAR increasing clearances at the crankshaft main and connecting rod bearings, and cam bearings. The oil specified for such an engine when NEW, may be a grade or even more too low of a viscosity to maintain adequate oil pressure at idle What"oil thickeners" are doing is increasing the oil's viscosity, making it more RESISTANT to thinning out under internal engine loads at the bearings. Like changing the flow characteristics from the oil's actual 5W30 rating to 10W30 or from 10W30 to 10W40, just enough to maintain adequate oil pressure at idle. IF a problem with oil pressure BEGINS SHORTLY AFTER AN OIL CHANGE, odds are the wrong oil was used-for the engine's current condition. This is especially liable to be noticed if the oil that HAD BEEN in the engine had been in there for too long or for too many miles, and had slightly thickened. Many/most people these days DO NOT change their own oil and have no idea if the CORRECT VISCOSITY and TYPE of oil (conventional vs synthetic) is actually being put into their engines at quickie oil change places or even when its done at dealerships. Sometimes the low paid or newer employees at places such as Firestone or Jiffy Lube don't KNOW the proper weight oil to put in- OR the SHOP may not have proper viscosity and type oil in stock and will, intentionally or unintentionally, be using a lighter weight oil on many vehicles. If one does not observe and ask what oil is going to being used, the odds of getting the wrong oil installed is much higher than if one does. If you KNOW that your vehicle NEEDS 10W30 or 10W40 oil to NOT have low oil pressure, MAKE CERTAIN that whoever is changing the oil is aware of that fact.

I had an issue with these symptoms as well. 2011 5.0 Lariat, only 78,000 miles. I was backing a trailer and truck died said “oil pressure low”. I thought that’s weird. Checked oil, was good. 3 months go by. My wife drove it to the store and came home, no issues. We went to leave a few min later and the truck wouldn’t start. I let it sit for about 20 min and tried again. It fired right up. I let it run for a few min and killed it. 30 min later went to start it and it would turn over but wouldn’t start. I suspected the fuel pump went out. Checked fuse location, #27 under the hood. Fuse was melted. I decided to be aggressive. I changed the fuel pump and had the fuse relocated. I think the fuel pump was going out and pulled too many amps causing the fuse to melt. I’ve since had no other issues. Truck has been running fine for a month now and I get 3 more miles to the gallon.

I had thw stall issue . i took off the mass air sensor and cleaned it. And the main issue with the stalling was the air intake was all gummed up . clean it with intake cleaner around the air flap very good it should stop it from stalling at stops and idle.

I have a 2013 F-150 5.0 and got an oil change and the next day low oil pressure dings and gauge drops below the L.... I changed the oil sensor/switch and also changed the oil filter to a motor craft ... it’s still doing it and I guess my next step is to take it to the Ford place and drop a $1000 on it ‍♂️

I know this is years late for some and may not be a fix for everyone. I’m not sure it will fix mine yet but here is what I’m going to try based on what I’ve gotten from my research. First off, I was driving down the road in my ‘14 Ford F-150 with 116,000 miles on it. Come to a red light hear a dinging light turns green try taking off no throttle response, and the message said low oil pressure, sat at the red light for about 3 minutes it finally started. Drove to my job site checked the oil and it was a little low. So I added oil to an acceptable level. It did not remedy the problem same issue the next day same low oil pressure light. Mechanic told me change oil asap go from 5- 20 to 5-30, this did not remedy the problem either same low oil pressure message same issues. The same mechanic told me to change the oil pressure switch, it’s easy DIY and cheaper than putting it through shop diagnostics, so I did this it ran fine for a while then a few day later it died again going down road, so that didn’t fix it. Same message of low oil pressure, only this time I pulled off the road into a gas station. Waited for gas pumps to clear because I had planned to fuel up that day anyway, once they cleared it cranked right up, I pulled to a gas pump shut the truck off filled up with fuel, went to leave truck would crank but not start. Tried every ten minutes, no luck. Decided to wait 30 minutes it started right up. Drove home 15 miles just fine. Now anytime I drive 10-20 miles at a time it has this same no start issue. I found this forum first, about 4 weeks ago, then a few days ago I done more research, found another forum and some videos and found some possible answers, although this has been mentioned in this forum before it had not been explained. In the other forum and videos people explained only that their vehicle would at random times would crank but not start. They explained to check fuse #27 which is a fuel pump fuse, also ford sells a relocate kit for this fuse because the fuse will melt and not make contact, then if you wait a few minutes it makes contact again and will restart. So after I looked at my fuse #27 sure enough it is melted. I ordered the relocation kit from Amazon I think $35 it won’t be here until Monday. Here is my take on the relation of the issues of low oil pressure causing the vehicle to stall out and the melted fuel pump fuse causing a no start. Here it is…. A low oil pressure reading from the oil pressure sensor like stated above in another post will shut the fuel off to save itself from engine damage thinking there is no oil pressure which would give you a low oil pressure reading right away, my truck has died on me 5 times all 5 times I noticed a wrench Icon popped up first and it wasn’t until I turned my key off that the low oil pressure light came on. This is where the bad fuel pump fuse in my opinion could cause the same symptoms, if the fuse fails to make contact this causes the fuel pump circuit to open which shuts off the fuel pump, BUT the fuel pump shut off without the computer seeing an ignition cycle off therefore the computer would tell you there is also low oil pressure. Imagine this, the ford dealership charged you thousands of dollars to “fix” your truck by changing out the fuel pump, while at the same time changing out the $35 fuse relocate which you would know nothing about because of the way it is relocated. Why isn’t there a recall? Makes you wonder.

I have a 2013 F150 with the 5.0L engine, 220,000 miles. Just had this problem occur when the vehicle comes to a stop and the engine rpms drop down to around 600-700... Low Oil Pressure warning pops up, but the engine does not shut off. When I give it a little gas to increase the rpms the warning goes away. Took it into my dealer and they diagnosed a faulty oil pressure switch assy. $24.62... Part number is SW8368 - Switch Asy - Oil Pressure So far the problem has not come back....

Its the PTAC coating FORD used inside the cylinder Bore that is wearing off and creating too large a gap for the piston rings. Perhaps go with 5w-30 Oil in the interim. Cant wait to see all the lawyers get millions on a class action lawsuit, while our motors die..........Gonna buy a Dodge for my next one.
