86 toyota 4runner TRE intermittent starting

Asked by GuruX6K8 Apr 08, 2017 at 10:57 PM about the 1986 Toyota 4Runner 2 Dr SR5 Turbo

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Every so often my Toyota 4Runner won't crank over.  If I rock it in a back and forth motion I can get it to crank over.  Not sure why it takes this to get it started. I'm concerned it could be the alternator but I don't wanna spend money to replace it and that's not the root problem. I do in fact get a 14.5 reading for charge on the voltage when it's running.

Does the starter make any bind noises when not cranking over & sometimes starter just spins or makes loud cherps sound if so may be your flywheel/ or starter gears or even starter no engaging or loose connections/or bad grounds if no noise like that above.
