I am a little confused about ignition coils. It seems that some coils require an external resistor and some do not. My 1965 mustang has an external resistor in the wiring harness but the engine has been converted to a 289 and I'm not sure that the coil being used needs an external resistor. So what is the deal on coils and external resistors?  In other words can I use a regular coil and bypass the resistor and still be OK ? thanks,   Walt

Thanks for the info , very helpful. In my case I had the instrument panel out while checking the lighting and I found that the resistor wire was bundled up with the other wiring( which seems a bad thing to do ) and had gotten very hot at one time and melted into the other wiring. Not knowing that it was a resistor wire I cut part of it out. After reassembling the panel I discovered that was a mistake. So I installed the wire out in the engine compartment next to the coil. The net resulting voltage is still the same . But It did prompt me to find out more about this subject . I had never heard of a resistor wire before. The car runs OK so I will just leave things alone.
