Metal scraping noise while accelerating

Asked by PopeLope Aug 14, 2019 at 04:36 PM about the 2013 Subaru Forester 2.5X

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My Forester makes what sounds like a metal on
metal scraping noise randomly only when
accelerating, the noise almost sounds like a dust
shield scraping the rotor and gets more frequent
after driving for a while. The noise stops when I
take my foot off of the gas/push in the clutch. It
seems to do it more often on hills. The car drives
and shifts fine.

Under motor or at a wheel? It;s either a heat shield rattle or a brake rotor shield scrape. Easy to deal with either, but not critical except to your peace of mind.

Hello, I have a similar if not the exact same noise from my forester. Mine is the SJ 2017 forester 2.5i 6 speed manual. The noise only happens during: acceleration, under load and only when in gear. I cannot pin point a location but put the noise anywhere from the transmission to the engine.. Dealer noticed it as well and said it could be throw out bearing and changed it. Needless to say it still made the noise driving out of the dealership... The noise sounds like a small bag of coins or metal pieces being spun or thrown around/grinding together.. I am not sure if it is clutch, tranny, front diff, bearings, or anything else. No dash light, no smells, no fluid leaks, nothing. Runs just fine though and I when I go to change the clutch and transmission fluid I will see if I can locate anything out of the ordinary. Until then I have no diagnosis.

Did you figure it out? I am having the same problem sounds like it could be the brakes but nothing seems to be wrong and it is not when Im braking only. Rotors seem to look good no grooves or anything?

Same here, very similar problem. Forester 2016, only when I accelerate and reach 30-40 miles an hour, you hear the soft (but annoying) grinding sound from the rear. Then it stops when I go over 40. Appears to be worst in the morning (humidity?) Also appears to come from the right.

I am also having this issue. Sounds like my front drivers side. I had something similar before and dealership told me it was a loose heat shield.
