what causes engine to quit when stopped and in gear?

Asked by migration_saltydog20... Mar 19, 2014 at 10:21 PM about the 1999 Dodge Durango SLT 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Transmission is not shifting at normal r.p.m.s, but will shift  at much higher rate. This has
been diagnosed as a solenoid inside the transmission. Was told OK to drive until repair
shop can get to it. Two days later was turning around and when coming to a stop, it
started jerking? and died when fully stopped. It cranked right up and when pulled into
gear it jerked and died again. Could not get it to stay running when transmission
engaged. I was able to let it roll in neutral and while rolling shifted in drive and got it
home. As soon as stopped again the engine stalled. Was told could be torque converter
locked up. Runs fine out of gear. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Torque converter lockup sounds right. Do an internet search and you can find a wealth of info. There are good durango and dakota owners groups out there that have good message boards. You are likely not the first person to have the problem.

First have your battery load tested and check if the alternator is giving out over 14 volts like it should. Common for the Durango to act up when battery is starting to go bad.
