The air conditioning system has gone out four times and was recently fixed and again today it is blowing hot air,

Asked by Apr 05, 2015 at 12:28 PM about the 2013 Chevrolet Sonic LS Sedan FWD

Question type: General

I bought the 2013 vehicle new and in cash.  I paid over 19 K for it and the air conditioning
system has been repaired four (4) times, each time the car was kept for over a week.
Today a very hot day in Florida, and it is AGAIN, blowing out hot air.  Any suggestions, at
this point I don't want the car.

If you have been taking it back to the Chevrolet Dealer (I hope so) and they still can't fix it then you have a lemon. Under The Lemon Law you have legal rights to getting a new car if yours can't be fixed. Talk to your local Office of Consumer Affairs or an attorney. Nobody should have to put up with this kind of nonsense with a brand new car! HTH. -Jim

Mine is also doing this. It will not work and then 5 miles down the road starts blowing cool. Sometimes it is hot and never cools. Sometimes very cold from the get go.

Unplug the battery for at least 5 minutes it will work again right after you plug back on.

Unplog the battery for at least 5 minutes , this will allow the central unit to reset. Air condition will work again.

I too have a 2013 Chevy Sonic and my a/c keeps having issues. And it's super frustrating living in the California desert but recently got mail saying there is a recall on my car so I would take it to a dealership and ask about recalls if your car qualifies for them and if the a/c .is part of the recalls

Disconnect your negative cable for 5 minutes. It should start working after you plug it back in.

Son has a 2012 that's blowing hot air. Took it to Firestone and they want over $800 to replace the compressor/clutch. I told him to try this to see if it works first. Crossing fingers!

Can someone please explain why diconnecting the battery fixes the ac? I have the same issue with my 2012 sonic and I’d like to not have to keep disconnecting my battery every day. Would like to resolve this.

Do you have to unplug the battery everyday for the AC to work?

Try tapping on the air conditioner cycling switch. If it works after tapping it, replace it. One other thing is unplug the wire and plug it back up, to see if it kicks on. Unplugging battery is temporary fix, it will continue if the problem is not fixed.

Bought my Sonic brand new in 2013. Every summer (except 2017) I've had to have the a/c fixed. I've spent at least $1000 fixing it. It sounds like this is common and needs to be a recall.

I have a 2015 still paying for it now A/C blowing hot air and I live in Miami Fl. Took it to dealer they told me they will charge $165 just to inspect and find what is the issue car is 29,253 miles and they told me my guarantee expired on January. Why is there are so many cars with this issue Chevrolet doesn’t take responsibilities over this matter and treat it as a recall? I think we all should send messages to Chevy headquarters this is rediculus besides the fact I was lied at purchase day they told me the car had bumper to bumper guarantee for the length of the payment life of the car which will be over in 2022. I never had issues with Toyota!

Hey guys mechanic here at meineke in fort Worth Texas you needs to replace the thermostat it's telling the central control to cut off your a/c so it does not over heat it's expensive to replace but it will fix your problem

I've had my Chevy Sonic 2016's air conditioning go twice on me. The issue surprisingly was a aluminum hose/line that has snapped on both occasions. So basically the fluid that they put in just doesnt stay in. So theres nothing to charge the system or keep it cold.

I have a 2015 Chevy sonic, that this happened to, my AC started blowing hot air, took it to the dealer and it was my air heater hose that had broken, cost me $38 to fix it, haven’t had a problem since, now I just need to recharge my system, It is not blowing cold enough for me

where can I purchase a Intake Manifold Runner Control Valve Actuator Solenoid Linkage

My a/c just stopped working Friday in my 2012 Sonic. First time it has ever happened. It happened like 2 miles after I hit 70,000 miles. I took it in and I think they said it was a sensor and the relay switch or something. It worked great for 3 days and stopped again :(

Just happened to me, heads up. Check your 40 amp fuse next to the relays. Fuse mapping is incorrect. Mine was blown and after research that’s affecting the overall thermal system. Replace that and it worked. This is probably a temp fix but I don’t see any issues with my condenser fan nor my thermostat. Will try to update if needed.
