Transmission fluid check/shaft seal

On a 01 dakota 2wd automatic  
when the driveshaft has been
removed to replace,-pulled the
yoke on it  out of the overdrive
there at  seal,  how much
transmission fluid can be lost?
I dont see the level at normal
after starting it an letting it get
warm in neutral- an I wanted to
get a idea how much I will need to
put back in before engaging in
drive with it warm.

Have put 2 an a half qts in now..to get it to normal range .. Can I loose that much if it sits with the shaft out an had been towed? Is warming it in Neutral accurate or does it have to get driven for a accurate reading?
