2003 Dodge Dakota-3.9L, starts but has backfire when going down the road, rpms go up n down.

Asked by mrs4x4 Apr 14, 2014 at 07:26 PM about the 2003 Dodge Dakota SLT Quad Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

What could cause the vehicle to back-fire (rpms go up n down, barely makes it up a hill
because it keeps backfiring); it almost runs as if it isn't getting sufficient fuel (fuel pump
was replaced a year ago, so that clearly isnt it or it wouldnt run at all). I was told to clean
the fuel injectors/filters, etc----any other things I should check? anyone have the same
problem?

I have the same exact problem with my 03 V8, 4x4 quad cab dodge dakota. Back firing, loosing power, white smoke coming out the exhaust. I replace injectors/fuel filter, flush lines. Still same problem.. Change all (3) 02 sensors.. Truck runs like a champ now

That's worth a try too--getting the fuel injectors cleaned and what not first. Thank you!
