2004 Explorer NXB 4x4 wont start

Asked by Urbanblacksmith Dec 29, 2014 at 08:46 AM about the 2004 Ford Explorer NBX V6 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Driving home from a 2 hr. road trip I stopped at a gas station before I got home. Start
the vehicle back up and started driving. Check engine light comes on and the motor
starts to hesitate and chug. When it died I heard a weird clattering noise. Now it wont
start, just clicks once and the gauges on the instrument cluster shake. Got it home
and tried to jump it thinking its a low battery but no luck. It was running fine up till this
point and had no reason to think there was anything wrong. it does have 190k miles
tho... other than that this has been a great vehicle and would hate to think its dead for
good. Please help!!

I'm thinking very bad gas at the station because of the poor running and clattering noise.

I stopped at the gas station for coffee not gas. Sorry I should have clarified that.Would the battery or alternator dying cause the clacking sound I heard when the engine died?

Pulled battery, alternator and Starter, All tested good. Took a battery off of another truck and it still did the same thing. Removed serpentine belt and checked all the pulies and they all moved freely. Only thing I didn't check is to see if the crank can move freely, I did notice that when I try to start the vehicle the belt seems to lurch but doesn't want to turn. Any ideas would be appreciated.

If you can't even put a wrench on the crank pulley and turn the engine over, then there are bad things wrong in there. If you can get it to turn with the starter do a compression test.
