3 speed to 4 speed change out

I am interested in changing out a 3 speed auto trans. from 84' 318i for one from 86' 4 speed auto out of 325es. can it be done

No. Two completely different engines. Tranny from an M20 engine wont mount to an M10. http://m10racer.com/default.aspx http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M20

I see that some 85's came with the 4 speed and that it used a different torque converter. don't they use a different bell housing to mount the trans. to the eingine

Like a said, two different type of engines. The 318i is a M10 4 cylinder the 325e/i is a 6 cylinder M20 engine. IT WILL NOT WORK.

E30 chassis BMWs are so plentiful, and can be had for a low cost. Why not just buy a 325i 5 speed manual?
