2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Won't Start, Turns Over

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

This morning I went to leave for work and my Jeep wouldn't start. It
displayed no symptoms prior to this. If I press the ignition switch with my foot
on the brake, it sounds like it wants to start (turns over). Tried having my
fiance jump it, didn't work. Spark plugs all seem good. No check engine light
on. 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4. What should be our first steps?
Crankshaft sensor? We have owned the vehicle for 2 years and have had all
recalls fixed and recently had to replace the oil pump (and sensor) and spark
plugs. This car is a nightmare. Our mechanic doesn't even want to touch it
anymore.

Possible crank sensor, maybe cam sensor(doubtful) or fuel pump. Make sure you hear it run before you start it.

Thanks Kevin. I appreciate your reply. Now that I've looked into symptoms of a possible fuel pump issue, I do recall noticing a few times a sudden sensation of increase/decrease in acceleration at high speed. We've also had a few times where the Jeep did not recognize that the key was in the vehicle after you got out and got back in while the engine was running. I don't know how indicative these things are but just throwing them out there...

Hi, Ever get a resolution to this? My 2012 Jeep did the same thing yesterday, no symptoms and then all of a sudden it won’t start. I recently got my oil changed but thats it. My car also sometimes doesn’t recognize the key even after I put a fresh battery in.

@lynn the same thing is currently happening to me! I just got an oil change today and it did it in the dock there and then I tried again and it worked fine. Any solution?

Same thing here... this morning it sounded like a leaf blower was under my hood, it would not turn over at all. I had an oil change last week. Also engine was on thought it was for the oil change but it came up as a vapor leak??? Thinking it needs a new starter...

I must have left a light on over night bc my friend was able to jump my car and I drove it around to charge the battery and haven't had any issues since. Hope you all get your jeeps started!

First thing I would do is check the fuel pump relay. I see a lot of people fixing the issue with that.

I live in rural northwest Wisconsin. It is December 22, 2022 and is currently 10 degrees below zero at 5 pm. Our 2012 Grand Cherokee would turn over just fine, but never achieve ignition. Looked up this discussion forum. No help here. Finally, I went back out and wondered if the many layers of clothing I'm wearing prevented the fob signal from reaching the Jeep's brain. Dug into my jeans front pocket and pulled out the fob, setting it on the passenger seat. Voila! Started right up. Lesson learned. The fob's radio wave signal is too weak to penetrate a snowmobile suit covered by a parka. Food for thought, folks.
