Coolant and overheating

I have a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0l straight 6. Started
overheating.I didn't find any external leaks.Oil stick was fine
just a little low on oil. I pulled the thermostat, replaced it
with a new one. Started refilling coolant in radiator but it
kept taking water but wouldn't fill. I didn't see any external
leaks. I pulled my oil stick and it was completely full of
water and oil. Milky. I never started the engine after pulling
the thermostat and oil was fine before refilling the radiator. .
I pulled oil plug and about a gallon of water came out
followed by sludge. I left the plug off and started adding
water to the radiator and it goes directly out the oil plug.
Any thoughts as to how this could be happening?

Did you have water in the system and the temps. went below freezing ? Did you add coolant when it was hot ? Sounds like a cracked block

I added water to the reservoir while it was hot but I didn't add any directly to the radiator and it kid dropped to about 20°f a few weeks before but it had antifreeze in it so it shouldn't have Frozen. I also prayed the engine block was degreaser and I didn't see any cracks externally but that doesn't necessarily mean that it's not cracked. I was going to change the water pump and if that doesn't fix it then I will change the head gasket and have the head checked but I would hate to all that work and then the block be cracked

If the water and oil have mixed that badly then a complete over haul would be in order , I think , If you really like the vehicle get a crate motor , I don't think it's worth it though
