NNED HELP!!! 06 Charger 5.7 REBUILD ADVICE

Asked by cdawildman91 Feb 01, 2017 at 08:22 PM about the 2006 Dodge Charger R/T RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I am getting ready for a rebuild on my 2006
Charger RT. I am just doing a basic 1 over rebuild
(please excuse my ignorance to some info as i am
new to this and open to advice). I plan on dropping
in a good street cam and will be replacing all
necessary parts as i have a bad lifter anyway. I am
aware that i will need a tune, the heads will have to
be reworked and while i have it apart i will have the
crank checked out and turned, if need be. I want to
be sure im not leaving anything out and all the
parts will work together correctly. Thanks in
advance for the feedback. So far i have.

What is a basic 1 over rebuild? How many miles on the engine? If you are going to do this yourself...do you have any engine rebuild experience? If you have no engine rebuild experience than put the tools down and step away from the vehicle and get some experienced help.

I have a friend with a good bit of rebuild experience that is going to help me do the work. I am fairly new to the territory myself, hence the needed advice and help. He recommended doing the smallest rebuild possible. His exact words were "1 over rebuild". I would assume this would be .010..?? Correct me if i am wrong. The engine has roughly 200k and has a blown head gasket as well as a blown intake gasket and a bad lifter.

Okay, just so that you are aware that rebuilding an engine is more than just installing the parts. Things need to be properly pre-lubed, crank end play needs checked, bearings need to be plasti-gauged and piston rings need to be properly end gapped and indexed. There are other things that need to be done also. Have fun.

Yes i understand it is more work than just installing parts. My friend that is actually doing the rebuild has alot of experience with rebuilds, and he gave me his advice. I am just trying to make sure I am getting the correct parts that will be compatible with each other, and make sure I'm not forgettIng anything. As for this rebuild in particular, any recommendations will be greatly appreciated. I plan to use the car as a daily driver, but I want to have plenty of power when i need it.

If your friend has lots of experience then I would check with him on what parts are needed. Also I would avoid the aftermarket cam and leave the cam stock, especially on a daily driver. It is a hemi and already has plenty of power. That would eliminate the need for a tune also.

So leave the cam as is. If I leave it alone, I would assume there would be no need for springs or retainers unless othewise proven during teardown...??? If i wanted to add a little power, which i do, a JLT cold air intake and a Diablosport Trinity T1000 programmer would probably be enough. If i wanted to add a little more power while I have the engine out though, what would you recommend?
