2012 Sedona Locking Issues

Asked by GuruCS3F1 Feb 21, 2019 at 08:26 AM about the 2012 Kia Sedona EX

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My wife has a 2012 Kia Sedona EX with power sliding side doors and power
lift gate in the back.  Recently the there has been an issue of not being able
to open the side door when you pull on the handles outside.  The key fob
and the buttons on the overhead will open and close the doors.  When the
side doors are open pushing the button next to the door on the inside will
not close the door it just beeps.  There is also and issue when you use the
key fob to lock the van.  Before when you clicked the lock on the fob twice
you would get the lights flash for the 1st click and the horn would sound for
the 2nd click.  It does not do any of that now.  The dealer says that it needs
$500.00 per door to fix and my wife is freaking.

I experienced the same issue. I had somehow inadvertently turned the power to the doors off by putting the power button in the overhead console in the off position. (Not depressed). In this position it will allow still allow the FOB and the sliding door buttons in the overhead to still open and close the doors but would not allow the door handle (inside or out) to auto open either door. When pushing the power button next to the window switch by the sliding door it would just chime. Once I pushed the power button on the overhead console to be in the depressed position the sliding doors statrted operating correctly. The reason I didn’t catch it immediately was because I thought if the power was turned off you would not be able to push the open close buttons on the overhead console or use the key fob to open the doors. All the power button does is disable the auto open and close function at the the doors themselves. Another reason I didn’t catch it was because about a month previously my alarm quit arming and when I put my van in drive the locks would lock and then click two more additional times as though they were trying to lock the doors three separate times even though they locked the first time. I just assumed the issue with the auto open and close function off the sliding doors were related to this. It was not. The doors are operating correctly now but the alarm is still not arming (no chirp or blinking of lights) when I lock the doors with the FOB. The alarm will not even sound when pushing the alarm on the FOB and the door locks still click three time when I go from park to drive.

This is to address the second part where the lights are not flashing and the horn doesn’t beep when pushing the lock button on the FOB. In my case I locked all the doors and then went around and tried to open them. It turned out I could open my rear lift gate. It wasn’t locking. This is what I believe happens. When I start the van and take it from park into drive the van attempts to lock the doors. Because it senses that all the latches are not locked it will a send a lock signal three times. If after three attempt the system will disable the lock signal to prevent it from attempting to lock the locks over and over and over again. Now when I stopped and get out of my van and clicked my lock button twice, it will lock the locks but since my liftgate was not being locked it doesn’t arm the alarm and that is why no light flash and the horn does not beep. The problem why my lift gate was not locking is because the actuator inside the hatch has a plastic ear which had got brittle and broke off. The arm that was attached to the actuator via the broken ear that locks and unlocks the latch can no longer do so. ( BTW when the ear breaks in can also break leaving the liftgate from being able to be unlocked. It won’t effect the setting of the alarm because it is broke in the lock position.) I purchased the following part from kiapartsnow.com for about $88 and found installation instructions on youtube. Start to finish was about 20 minutes. Not difficult at all. Dealership wanted $500 parts and labor. There are variations of the part number 812904 so I would recommend entering the VIN for your vehicle to make sure. Remember this part number is only applicable for the 2012 Kia Sedona. Kia 812904D700Tail Gate Bell Crank Assembly

I have the same problem with our 2012 Sedona tailgate not locking and have been looking on Facebook for those instructions. Where did you find them? Ernie
