My 2012 Sonata with 1900 miles has 2 problems thus far. First, the gas mileage is poor, Second, there is creaky/squeak from the right rear that behaves like a suspension problem.

Asked by sonatacam Mar 18, 2012 at 07:18 PM about the 2012 Hyundai Sonata SE FWD

Question type: General

Gas Mileage Problem - Average about 22 MPG with 50%Hwy/50% City driving .  Gentle acceleration and in ECO mode at all times
Squeak -  Right Rear area creaking squeak with any car body movement .  Getting louder daily.
Going to dealer in a week to address both problems.
Any suggestions on these issues?
Only 1900 miles on this car.

Well you're not the first one to complain about that problem. My friend actually bought the Hyundai Sonata last year, and every time I'm in it I hear an annoying squeaking noise at the back. He ignores it, but if you hate those little noises as much as I do, you go and fix it asap. Hopefully the dealer will help you, if not then that's tough luck.

My 2012 2.O has same squeak in right rear. Shop says it a body weld break. Mine is scheduled to be taken apart and rewelded. Wil let you know if this is the fix or not.

make sure they check the rear cross member. They have align pins and can be off alittle or not greased when installed at factory. We have one at my shop were i am service manager were going to adress it next wed .

The dealer reviewed the noise over two visits and determined that the rear shock needed to be replaced. He said that they were on back order due to the high demand. After it is replaced I will post if it was a cure or not. I will mention the alignment pins suggested in the previous post on my next visit to avoid a forth trip.

hopefully im wrong and the shock fixes your noise. but all the ones ive fixed have been the alignment pin rubbing on the body. ive had to slightly enlarge the hole where the alignment pin goes into the body and apply a felt wrap on the pin to get the noise to stop.its almost like the pins arent at the right ngle when everything is tightened properly

I spoke to the technician that worked on my car and both the alignment pin was worked on in addition to the shock being replaced. It has been about a week and there is no return of the problem. With this being a common problem, I hope that the Hyundai factory folks get the message and correct it in their shop. The input to me on this has been very productive.
