chirping sound in early AM start. 2012 Volvo s60 85K Miles

Asked by GVOLVO Aug 19, 2020 at 07:09 AM about the 2012 Volvo S60 T5

Question type: General

My 2012 Volvo S60 T5 makes a brief chirping sound from a cold start in
morning. Only then starting the car during day when it's warmer there is no
chirp. In the morning it lasts about 15 seconds then is gone. Cars seems to
run fine. I went for a tire replacement yesterday as I had a blowout and
asked them about it was told there was a leak by timing belt and some oil on
belt and it would be 1400 to fix it. I was floored. Does that seem like an
accurate diagnosis and quote?

Oil on a belt would certainly cause a squeak. Serpentine belt failures are pretty common on this engine, and they can lead to severe engine damage. I can't remember exactly what it causes, I believe it ends up wrapping up in the timing belt or something. Anyway, the serpentine belt tensioner fails, and that is what leads to extensive damage. I assume that the oil leak on the timing belt is either the crankshaft seal or one of the camshaft seals. That needs to be repaired as soon as possible, since an oil-soaked timing belt could also lead to engine failure, and that $1,400 will turn into $5,000 real quick. I recommend suggesting to the shop to check out the serpentine belt and tensioner to make sure that it isn't causing the noise. The easy way to diagnose this is to remove the belt and run the engine for a minute, and if it doesn't make the noise, odds are that's the problem. Either way, this is something you want to get fixed ASAP.
