In the 700 series BMW's the battery is in the trunk, but under the hood is a post for the positive terminal on the left side (driver's side) of the engine compartment for jumping or getting a jump start. Use either, red positive to positive on the bimmer to the other car, and black jump cable frame to frame. Better yet buy a battery charger, they are not expensive, better yet buy a battery for your sons car or an alternator or whatever it needs. You don't want to make a habit of using your 2012 bimmer as a charger for another car This is a 700 series BMW battery location

A 2012 BMW 7 series- that's a pretty expensive battery charger! Jumping is for emergencies only- and even then, I would rather call AAA- why? JUMPER CABLES PUT YOU AND YOUR CAR AT RISK OF SERIOUS INJURY- hello

He's right ya know...jamnblues that is...your $70,000 car was not meant to be used that way, but you asked so I did my best to explain. but please, take our advice and fix the son's car...is he the one who came up with this idea? Next time just say no, You are not going to use my car for that. (I would not allow it with my car and it's worth maybe 1/10th of yours) it will save you stress, money, time

Buy a booster pack. It will take 24 hours to charge the pack, and then you have it to boost what ever else needs a boost. DO NOT USE THE BMW. The multiplexed electrical system will not take it. If you simply have no choice but to start your son's car with yours, disconnect the batter, but be prepared to go through the hassles of teaching it to run again. For one thing, giving a boost, and not having everything JUST RIGHT, and you will blow your fuel pump. That is a $3,000 repair. A booster pack is all of $150. Guess which way I lean.

Thinking about it- I think the only reason BMW puts those accessible terminals under the hood is to get the BMW started in case of being stranded somewhere with a dead battery- and then get back home or to a garage- NOT to use them to jump other people's cars- and again, this is what AAA is for-
