2011 Corolla stalling

Asked by ajs225 Feb 11, 2016 at 08:59 PM about the 2011 Toyota Corolla S

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I bought a 2011 Corolla S used last spring. The first 2 months or so that I
owned the car, I had sporadic stalling problems, almost always when I was
at a complete stop or had just started accelerating from a complete stop. The
best description would be that the engine gave a little cough and then died. It
always started right back again. Tried a few things, including injector cleaner
and electric sensor cleaner, and also made sure the butterfly valve was
clean, and the problem went away.

Today, my car stalled twice, both at low speed (about 15mph the first time;
the second was probably about 5-10mph). The first time, it started with no
trouble. The second time, the engine turned over but wouldn't start without a
jump. Took it straight to Autozone, where they tested the battery and the
alternator. Both tested perfectly. Any suggestions about what it might be?

The air filter looks good. By suggestion of someone I talked to last night, I watched the tach more closely on my drive to work this morning. The car was idling at about 800 rpm, both cold and after the engine warmed up. Probably more interestingly, it had a little bounce when I was coasting at low speed. It would drop all the way to the 800ish rpm idle rate before bouncing back up to somewhere around 1200-1500 rpm. It only would bounce once, then hold at the higher rpm. Always felt smooth, aside from some engine sluggishness right when it dropped to 800. I didn't think to test this until I already got to work, but my suspicion is that it would stall if I hit the gas while it had dropped to 800 rpm.

Some air filters look good from the outside but is clogged try this remove air filter and drive vehicle and see if it makes a difference will not hurt vehicle to do this test. If still doing same thing post back. Also clean or replace Idle Air Control valve or Mass Air Flow sensor depending on which one your vehicle has.
