Why does the car heater work fine then suddenly go cold?

Asked by Raymond Dec 05, 2016 at 10:11 AM about the 2006 Chrysler 300 C RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We have a 2006 Chrysler C with 50k miles. We usually keep the car heater at 70-72 degrees.  It will be  working fine then suddenly cold air is coming out both sides.  We turn the heat up all the way up then immediately back to 70-72 and it again is warm.  Works fine for a while then cycle repeats.  This has been ongoing for a while but seems to be happening more often now.  Any ideas?

There are a lot of different ways a car heater can fail, but the problem you’re describing is usually caused by one of two basic problems. Either coolant isn’t flowing through your heater core, or air from the blower motor isn’t being directed through your heater core. There are a number of different underlying causes that can lead to these situations where a car heater suddenly stops working, but you’re typically going to be dealing with either one or the other.
