Misfire and shaking at stops and at lower speed

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I own 2011 Volkswagen Jetta that started shaking while driving at lower
speeds and at stops. I took it to VW certified repair shop that tried changing
the sparkling plus and cleaning valves, but the issue continued. Then they
tried Shaft/Cranking Sensor, but the issue still continued. Afterwards, upon
diagnosis, the mechanic concluded that it's a timing chain issue that cause
the engine failure. This issue is very common among Volkswagen cars and it
is quite expensive.

I think you should start the diagnosis by having the fault codes scanned for free at the auto parts store and I'm surprised the VW shop didn't do that. And yes, if your VW has over 100,000 miles you may be having a timing belt failure. They usually jump a cog or two and run terrible with the valves running out of synchronization with the pistons, spark and injectors. If left to get worse, the fabric (Kevlar/rubber) belt can break and cause engine damage. There is an inspection port under the crankshaft pulley cover to inspect this belt but don't run it hard or wait for it to break. I had an independent shop do one, parts and labor for $500 but dealers want double that.

What auto parts stores would you recommend? Also, would you mind sharing the independent shop you did the work done?

Even if there is no "Check Engine" light, there may be a stored fault code to help you figure out what's wrong. I am referring your to any auto parts store so a VW dealer does not charge you to get these codes. Try Autozone , Advance Auto, Pep Boys etcetera or just buy a $15 code reader at WalMart or Ebay. I'm here in Pennsylvania but you have independent shops everywhere, you can call around and get a quote. I like Bean's Auto here in town. (814-336-1784). They were a VW dealer 30 years ago but the mechanics stayed and have a great reputation. You can talk to them for info and help although I'm sure you live too far away for a repair. Good Luck.
