Why do Cadillac batteries need to be "programmed"?

My 2003 Cadillac SLS doesn't always start. It starts fine with a jump start but
may or may not start again very frequently (maybe twice a day, or every other
day, depending on how it feels). I brought it to the dealer and they said I need a
new battery and it must be programmed (extra charge for that). I am wondering
why a battery needs to be programmed?

I don't think they mean the battery. Things lose programming when the battery is changed out and must be re-programmed.

Why, Indeed? I guess the answer would be: "because we are now in the 21st Century and machines and paperwork must be infinitely more complicated"
