How much to repair, replace a transmission in 2002, 530i, automatice?

Transmission failed after I gunned it to merge into a lane on the freeway.
After less than 1/4 of acceleration, "transmission failsafe Prog." warning came
on in the info center, and immediately, I no longer had any gear.  After I coasted
to a stop, I could not get it into any forward or reverse gear, only park.
I'm concerned about cost. The car has 204,000 miles on it.

Unless you locate trans and do it yourself a shop will charge $1500 or more, a Re-manufactured unit at rockauto.com is $2,868.89 +$800 core=$3,668.89 to get it shipped then return the core for the $800 back. Shipping may or may not apply so check that out on your own. Rockauto is the cheapest around that I would trust anyway it is a 3 year warranty, you can find a reman somewhere cheaper but get a warranty & install warranty on issues due to installed incorrectly.
