Transmission fluid has a distinctively different smell then Gas. When mixed with water both can be swirly as you described however transmission fluid has a reddish color to it.

If the tranny fluid mixes with water it will look swirly. By itself it will be solid color. If the tranny fluid has a bunch of metal in it it can look swirly as well, but this will look more like metalic paint.

The transmission fluid in that vehicle was originally clear but it turns black over time. Any oil product will leave a rainbow coloring on water. In any case you should have your vehicle looked at by a professional as neither leak is a good sign.

I didn't notice mention of a specific vehicle in this post ......I have never worked with clear tranny fluid which vehicles use this.
