overheating problem....

Good day ...i own a 328i '97  automatic have
overheating problems and now i drove the
car while it was overheating the gage light
went on and then the light went of and i had
to get me and the car to a safe place
because i couldn't stop for it was late night
so i drove her without water i think because i
ran out off water so while pushing to get to
a safe place the engine died 2times second
time she just didn't wanted to start again
luckily i was just a few meters from a safe
place and could tow her further  ....my
question is if i drove her to that extent what
mayor problem can i have now  why did the
engine die ?

That does not sound good. Overheating an engine can cause major damage. The most likely damage is a blown head gasket and possibly a cracked head. This allows coolant into the cylinders and will lower compression causing the engine to no longer run. The engine probably would not start when hot because the fuel will no longer vaporize properly in the cylinders. Unfortunately, if you ran it as hot as described then you likely have severely damaged the engine.
